After a UKOUG Special Interest Group last summer, Julian Dyke and Simon Haslam were chatting about their work over a beer (or three). Julian had been doing RAC installs for over 2 years and was debating about how often he came across the same old problems and how much time he spent (i.e. his clients' money) doing relatively routine tasks. Simon, meanwhile, had just installed a set of Oracle Application Servers using Solaris Jumpstart and was singing (well, muttering anyway) the praises of Oracle response files (and had given a talk about them at the UKOUG DBMS SIG in July). In a moment of inspiration they realised that they could make the RAC installation process much more efficient, as well as incorporating all the hard lessons Julian had learnt along the way, by automating and standardising the install into a single product... RAC-in-a-BOX™!

Since 2005 Julian has worked as an independent consultant for clients in the UK, France, Belgium and Germany. Prior to this he worked for Intel Solution Services, BMC Software, Simulus Limited and Miles 33. He also contracted for a couple of years as a production/development DBA with the Audit Commission.
Julian is also one of the founders of the UK Oracle User Group RAC Special Interest Group and current SIG Chair.
In 2006 Julian authored, along with Steve Shaw from Intel, the book Pro Oracle Database 10g RAC on Linux (ISBN 1-59059-524-6) which has rapidly become the reference book on the subject and is available from all good booksellers!
